One of our clients has benefited from a huge club and community effort to build him a house custom made for a wheelchair user. Local sports stars including boxers Ricky Hatton and Naseem Ahmed and Ryan Giggs and other football stars from both Manchester United and City have rallied round to help with fund raising.

Local suppliers have donated or supplied at cost the materials and the building team are a mixture of volunteers and professionals. RFU Injured Players Foundation have given a grant for the cost of the lift system that is being installed. We are delighted to help add to the tremendous work done by those who have rallied round our client since his injury.

Our client needed funding to improve the ramp he uses to get in and out of his vehicle. With funding from RFU IPF, he now has a wider and lighter but stronger ramp making it easier for him to manoeuvre and for his carers to put up and take down.

BEFORE & AFTER

  • When young children grow, accommodation can be tight. This can be a particular issue when your home has to be wheelchair friendly.

  • With the help of RFU IPF, one of our clients was able to extend his loft to provide a new bedroom with en-suite facilities for his children.

  • RFU IPF provided part-funding for this project to help improve his family’s quality of life.
Coping with a disability can be difficult if your home is not adapted to it. In another case RFU IPF supplied additional support funding for improvements to make level access at front and rear of the house, internal changes to give freer movement in a wheelchair and user friendly work surfaces in the kitchen at wheelchair height. The changes mean that the client can live independently with minimal support from others in a modern, well appointed home that suits his needs.

An unusual request for funding came when a client’s son wanted to have a pet dog. Because the dog needed to be suitable to live in a household with a person with a disability, advice was sought on the right breed. In consequence, a boxer was chosen.

This has given the client’s son a new friend and also taught about what is involved in having to care for someone else.
